We are currently seeking an experienced, motivated, and hands-on Works Officer to join our Assets & Maintenance team at Adelaide Zoo. This is a full-time, permanent position working Monday to Friday, on a 5-day roster.

About the role:

As a Works Officer, you will play an important role in maintaining the safety, presentation and functionality of Adelaide Zoo. Working with a high level of autonomy, you will undertake a broad range of practical maintenance, repair, construction and operational support activities across animal habitats, visitor areas, workshops and operational infrastructure.

No two days will necessarily look the same. You may repair fencing, complete general maintenance, install signage, undertake carpentry or fabrication tasks, assist with exhibit improvements, operate plant and equipment, or respond to maintenance issues across the Zoo.

In this role, you will:

• Undertake reactive and preventative maintenance across animal exhibits, visitor areas, workshops and operational spaces
• Complete practical repairs including fencing, painting, paving, concreting, carpentry-style repairs and minor plumbing
• Assist with construction, fabrication, welding and installation works within your skills and competencies
• Construct, repair and install animal enrichment items, furniture, fixtures and operational infrastructure
• Maintain roads, pathways, gates, barriers and animal containment infrastructure
• Support exhibit modifications, site improvements and operational projects
• Undertake general site services including green waste and bin collection, gutter and sump cleaning and general site cleanliness
• Maintain visitor facilities including playgrounds, seating, bins, shade structures and public amenities
• Operate vehicles, plant and equipment where appropriately licensed and competent
• Respond to maintenance requests, troubleshoot issues and support the day-to-day operation of Adelaide Zoo

About you:

You are a practical, proactive person who takes pride in the quality of your work and enjoys solving problems. You are comfortable getting stuck into a variety of hands on tasks, working independently when required, and collaborating with a wider team to get the job done.

To be successful, you will have:

• A current South Australian Driver's Licence
• A White Card
• Demonstrated experience in maintenance, construction, property services or a similar hands-on operational environment
• The ability to undertake a broad range of practical maintenance and repair tasks with minimal supervision
• Experience operating tools, plant and equipment safely and effectively
• A sound understanding of Workplace Health and Safety requirements and safe work practices
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to prioritise competing maintenance needs
• The ability to work collaboratively while also being confident working independently
• Effective communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with colleagues, visitors, contractors and other stakeholders
• A commitment to the vision, values and conservation purpose of Zoos SA

Desirable candidates will also:

• A Certificate III or equivalent qualification in a relevant trade or field would be highly regarded.
• Additional tickets, licences or experience in areas such as forklift operation, MR or HR driving, working at heights, confined spaces, elevated work platforms, welding, fabrication, fencing, carpentry, landscaping, plumbing, tractors, skid steers or loaders would also be desirable.

Monarto Safari Park is looking for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic individual to join the Life Sciences team, as Assistant Curator of Natives.

Zoos SA is a not-for-profit conservation charity that exists to save species from extinction and connect people with nature. Zoos SA manages Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park which is one of the largest open range zoos outside of Africa, spanning more than 1,500 hectares of diverse fauna and flora, having recently expanded with the inclusion of our Asian Elephant habitat.

Zoos SA has a long history of initiating and participating in many successful innovative conservation programs, including the establishment of breed for release programs for threatened species, playing a leading role in these programs for exotic and native species.

ABOUT THE ROLE...

The Assistant Curator will safely, efficiently, and effectively support the Curator with operational aspects of Monarto Safari Park’s collection and the native team. This position will support the day-to-day operations of this department with a focus on leading and managing the team, advising, and guiding excellent animal husbandry, the promotion of exciting visitor experiences and involvement in conservation programs.

This is a permanent full-time position working across a five-day roster. Experience with a variety of native species; fieldwork and managing breed for release programs preferred.

As part of our Life Sciences management team, day-to-day tasks may include:

• Undertake routine and specialist administrative and front-line management tasks.
• Support the Curator with the management and oversight of animal welfare and husbandry standards for Monarto Safari Park’s native collection, visitor experiences and workforce culture and performance.
• Provide input into exhibit and enclosure planning, development, design, and maintenance, ensuring animal husbandry and welfare standards are met and relevant protocols followed and developed as required.
• Collaborate with the Curator and Team Supervisor to establish collection management standards and practices that align with Zoos SA Animal Collection Plan and regional/global species management principals Liaise closely with the Curator, Visitor Operations Team, and Conservation Manager to promote our in-situ conservation initiatives for a variety of native species.

ABOUT YOU...

To be considered for this position you will need to meet the following selection criteria:

• Minimum of Certificate III in Wildlife & Exhibited Animal Care.
• Proven leadership capability with a strong focus on team development, mentoring and performance management.
• Experience in captive management of native fauna, including species management and conservation programs (in-situ and ex-situ).
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies, procedures and safe work practices relating to animal husbandry, training, and conditioning.
• Strong commitment to animal welfare and continuous improvement in animal care.
• Experience in rostering, operational coordination, invoice management and project delivery.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills across staff, volunteers, peers, and the public.
• Experience in planning and coordinating animal transfers (desirable).
• Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritise and adapt to changing demands.
• Proven capability to collaborate with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
• Strong project management skills are highly regarded.
• Driver’s licence (Manual and 4WD experience desirable).
• Knowledge and understanding of Workplace Health & Safety principles and process.

Monarto Safari Park is looking for an experienced, motivated, and enthusiastic Keeper to join the Life Sciences team across primate species.

Zoos SA is a not-for-profit conservation charity that exists to save species from extinction and connect people with nature. As one of the largest open range zoos outside of Africa, spanning more than 1,500 hectares of fauna and flora, we have recently expanded Monarto Safari Park with our elephant habitat!

As of May 2025, Monarto Safari Park began offering longer visits and a range of new and wild safari experiences in an area known as Wild Africa including incredible tours through herds of roaming animals and with a first-of-its-kind luxury resort, luxury tents and lodge facilities. 

ABOUT THE ROLE...

This role is responsible for maintaining a high standard of animal husbandry and welfare of a range of primate species on a full time, 7-day rotating roster.

The successful candidate must be motivated, organised, have great time management skills, fosters an inclusive and respectful workplace culture, contributes positively to effective teamwork showing a desire to strive for corporate goals and objectives and optimally have experience with a high-risk social species and a history working with large and small primate species.

Whilst the role is currently required to work across the primate sections, the successful candidate may be required to work in other sections of the Life Sciences department, should operational needs require it.

As part of our Life Sciences team, day-to-day tasks may include:

• Obtaining, preparing, and providing food to animals in accordance with established diets, feeding schedules and procedures.
• Cleaning food and water vessels, holding areas, exhibits and food preparation and storage areas to required standards.
• Observing and reporting on animal behaviour and changes to the condition of animals.
• Working with animal health department to provide prescribed treatments and undertake routine examinations and procedures.
• Maintaining diaries and animal records and report to the Supervisor Keeper.
• Participating in the implementation and monitoring of behavioural enrichment and training and conditioning programs.
• Undertaking formal presentations and ‘Keeper Talks' responding to questions, whilst presenting to public groups as well as the media.
• Working consistently in accordance with established safety procedures to ensure animal security, personal safety, protection of co-workers and the public.
• Working in line with relevant Policy and Procedures/Standard Operating Procedures and providing feedback and proactive suggestions for change as required.

ABOUT YOU...

To be considered for this position you will need to meet the following selection criteria:

• Have or be working towards Certificate III in Wildlife and Exhibited Animal Care preferably with practical Zoo Keeping experience.
• Proven experience in a practical primate role (other taxa experience desirable).
• Experience with managing social species (Chimpanzee/Ape's/Lemurs experience desirable)
• Experience working with high-risk animals and two keeper safety check system.
• Drivers licence (Manual and 4WD experience desirable).
• Knowledge and understanding of Workplace Health & Safety principles and process.
• Firearms licence (Desirable).
• Medium Rigid licence (Desirable).
• Fire response training (Desirable).
• Informative and engaging presentation skills.
• Experience in training and conditioning including an ability to establish and continue established training plans.

ABOUT THE ROLE...

Guided by Zoos SA’s values, you will play a key role in maintaining and enhancing our Monarto Safari Park and Wild Africa sites undertaking construction duties, and routine and reactive maintenance of animal habitat and general asset infrastructure, to ensure they meet with requisite compliance standards while working across a 7-day roster.

Duties of this role will vary and may include:

• Assist trades personnel with repair, construction, fabrication and demolition work.
• General maintenance of animal and general asset infrastructure to ensure structures are safe and are maintained to the highest standards
• Carry out minor maintenance / new work duties with minimal supervision.
• Undertake basic maintenance of vehicles, plant, and equipment, including fueling and checking tire pressures.
• Maintain roads and tracks.
• Collect, transport and deliver items to and from the Zoo, including rubbish and waste materials.
• Clean items as required, including vehicles, drains, gutters, and equipment.
• Erect and maintain signage, rubbish bins, furniture, fences and similar.
• Change light globes and tubes.
• Operate heavy machinery such as forklift truck, sweepers, tractors, vehicles and trucks where licensed and required.
• Assist trade personnel to clean and maintain all relevant work areas including immediate areas around workshops.
• Identify and report maintenance defects.

ABOUT YOU…

To be successful in this role you will need to meet the following selection criteria:

• A current South Australian driver’s licence, manual capability desirable.
• General hand experience assisting trades within a facility management environment.
• A broad range of skills/experience in various maintenance fields, i.e. carpentry, metal work, fencing, plumbing, concreting, paving, electrical, mechanical, painting, etc
• High level of experience in maintenance techniques and practices.
• A strong understanding of Workplace Health and Safety principles.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with colleagues and volunteers.

Desirable candidates will also have:

• Experience working on rural/farm/remote properties/sites.
• Experience in metal fabrication and/or welding
• Experience in conservation.
• Experience using heavy machinery such as excavators, dump trucks, loaders, etc
• Experience with automatic gate systems
